From Praise to Fury: Right-wing Response to Epstein File Release is Mixed.

Right-leaning responses to the limited release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.

Administration Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole

Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction procedure.

Questions Raised by Redactions

While the former president's identity and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions raise significant questions about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater openness.

“People are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.

Some Rightwing Commentators Rally Behind the Disclosure

But, a segment of conservative commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.

The disclosed materials—from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their identities obscured.

But some are not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed some rightwing voices to go on the offensive.

“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely accused President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Clinton Campaign Issues Statement

Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.

“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement concluded.

Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued

Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted after the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that came before the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the files' release.

The commentator, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative influencers were given hard-copy binders of files that included no previously unseen data.
