Survivors of Catholic Clergy Sex Abuse Express Hope Following Meeting with the Pontiff

Individuals who experienced sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed fresh optimism after their initial meeting with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

The board president, heading the anti-abuse organization, commented that the pontiff's choice to engage with them so soon in his leadership spoke volumes about his dedication to tackling the problem.

Worldwide Strict Approach Pushed

The group is pushing for a global zero-tolerance policy that would defrock any priest who confesses to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a child. This approach has been implemented in the US.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "opposition in some parts of the globe" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is pushback," they stated.

Legacy Challenge

The new Pope, who assumed the role in spring, has taken on this longstanding problem that has plagued the Church for decades.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an historic meeting on paedophilia within the Church and changes to canon law to clearly outlaw sexual abuse.

Deeply Felt Link

For Hickey, who uses they/them pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the policy is personal. The North American advocate revealed they were victimized by a priest who was subsequently transferred between different parishes.

"We trust this will set the tone for his papacy, because we want to work with him," they expressed. "We have the common objective, we seek to end abuse by religious officials."

Significant Encounter

Seven representatives of the organization, which represents survivors and supporters from over thirty nations, engaged with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The discussion, originally scheduled for 20 minutes, lasted to a sixty minutes, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The pontiff was described as "quite empathetic" when listening to the story of a woman victimized at a church-run institution for native youth in Canada.

They added the Pope was "tender" about their personal experience and appeared "very humble, funny, and approachable."

"Victims have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," they commented. "I felt like he was genuine, practical, and very open and eager to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The group is hoping that revisions to church regulations will facilitate the implementation of the strict approach worldwide.

They have spoken with experts and compiled materials that they will present to Pope Leo.

"He seemed engaged in looking at it," Hickey noted.

Accountability Emphasized

A recent Vatican-commissioned document highlighted the "importance of a streamlined protocol for the resignation and/or removal of Church leaders or personnel in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The document also pointed out that victims consistently emphasized the "urgent need for bishops and major superiors to be made responsible for negligence and cover-up."

Path Ahead

The representative shared they informed the pontiff at the beginning of their discussion: "This represents as much a challenge for him to participate in a conversation as it was for us."

Following the encounter, Hickey voiced hope for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the conclusion, coming together and establishing a connection and persisting to build that bond is a step in the right direction," Hickey stated.

Hickey added that they shared with the pontiff: "Just because it's a difficult period, I feel like we can change how the narrative ends - he appreciated that."
