The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: How a Gentleman I Barely Knew Helped Me Obtain the Job That Transformed My Existence

In the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my friend was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had planned a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a big multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side known as International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the canteen, where we grabbed food, found a table, and started talking to people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I shared that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the university – close to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I ought to seek a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that after dark. The Iraqi student approached me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but immediately told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for three years. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his identity, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I lacked the bravery or nerve to reach out at an Ivy League university and seek a position. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that role at the university resulted in a role in Europe where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
